Supplementation with Omega-3 and COVID-19

A randomised clinical trial on the effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on clinical and biochemical parameters in critically ill patients with COVID-19 has recently been published.
The 3 main omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These are important in various organ functions including muscle activity, blood clotting, digestion, fertility, immune system and cell division and growth. DHA is important in brain development and function and ALA is an essential fatty acid.

The randomised, double-blind clinical trial was conducted in 128 critically ill patients. Analytical data were collected at baseline and 14 days after the intervention. Omega-3 supplementation improved the levels of several parameters of respiratory and renal function in these patients.
