Alpha lipoic acid in migraine episodes

Migraine is a common and chronic neurological disease. It is characterized by a unilateral headache and sometimes occurs with nausea and/or photophobia.
The results of a study on the influence of alpha lipoic acid on this disease have recently been published. It is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Ninety-two women with episodic migraines participated and the effects of 12 weeks of supplementation with 2 intakes of 300 mg/d of alpha lipoic acid were analyzed.
The results showed that alpha lipoic acid supplementation induced a significant decrease in serum lactate and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 levels compared to the placebo group. This study therefore highlights the potential of alpha lipoic acid supplementation in the management of episodic migraine severity and frequency.
