Bidirectional relationship between the Oral Microbiota and Integral Health

The oral microbiota and its relationship with holistic health.

The oral microbiota is the set of microorganisms that inhabit our mouth. These microorganisms include bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microbes, which interact with each other and with the host (i.e. us) in a variety of ways.

Although they have sometimes been associated with disease, most of these microbes are beneficial to our health. In fact, oral microbiota serve several important functions, such as protecting against infection, facilitating digestion, and maintaining a healthy balance in our mouths and throughout our bodies.

Oral microbiota and oral health

First, the oral microbiota plays a key role in oral health. For example, some bacteria that live in our mouths help prevent tooth decay, while others can cause periodontal diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis. Good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, is essential to maintain a healthy balance of oral microbiota and prevent these diseases.

In addition, some studies suggest that the oral microbiota may also be linked to other diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. For example, it has been observed that certain oral bacteria may contribute to the formation of plaque in the arteries, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Oral microbiota and general health

But the oral microbiota not only influences oral health, it is also related to the overall health of our body. For example, it has been found that the oral microbiota can affect the gut microbiota, and vice versa. This means that an imbalance in the oral microbiota can lead to problems in the digestive system, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

In addition, it has been suggested that the oral microbiota may be linked to the immune system, and that an imbalance in the oral microbiota may increase the risk of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn’s disease.

Taking care of the oral microbiota

Because the oral microbiota plays such an important role in our health, it is important to take proper care of it. Some tips for maintaining a healthy oral microbiota are:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day, for two minutes each time.
  • Use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between teeth.
  • Use toothpastes with natural ingredients that respect and regulate the oral bacterial flora such as ActivOzone Dental Fresh
  • Limiting consumption of sugary foods and drinks, as they encourage the growth of bacteria that can cause tooth decay
  • Avoid smoking, as tobacco can cause periodontal disease and increase the risk of oral cancer.
  • Visiting the dentist regularly for a dental check-up and cleaning.

In conclusion, the oral microbiota plays an important role in our overall health, and taking proper care of it can help us prevent disease and maintain a healthy balance throughout our body.
